Types of Insomnia
Insomnia is a fairly common sleep disorder characterized by the inability to go to sleep or stay asleep. It affects 1 out of 3 people, and about 20% to 40% of adults will experience it at least once during the year. Although the symptoms of insomnia are the same, there are a few different classifications of this sleep disorder.
Transient insomnia is probably the most common type of insomnia experienced by people. It lasts for less than a week and may be caused by changes in a person’s environment, stress, or a medical disorder. This type of insomnia generally goes away by itself.
This type of insomnia lasts from a week to a month. Despite numerous opportunities for sleep, a person is unable to obtain it or remain in the sleep state through the entire night. Acute insomnia is most often caused by chronic stress. It is also associated with major life events like the birth of a baby or bereavement and may be caused by medications.
Insomnia that lasts for over a month is classified as a chronic condition. Typically, it is caused by an underlying medical condition. However, it may be idiopathic as well. Resolving the underlying medical condition usually alleviates the insomnia. If the insomnia is the primary condition, then your doctor may prescribe medication and other lifestyle changes to treat it.
Insomnia that has no known cause is called primary insomnia. Because the reason for the insomnia is unknown, the condition is treated independently. In some cases, primary insomnia may actually be a condition called delayed sleep phase syndrome, which is a circadian rhythm disorder. Untreated primary insomnia can lead to the onset of medical problems such as cardiovascular disease and mood disorders.
Secondary of Co-Morbid Insomnia
Secondary or co-morbid insomnia describes insomnia that is caused by other conditions or onsets at the same time as other health problems. For example, brain lesions or traumatic brain injury can induce insomnia.
